You can save articles from the web or parts of articles by highlighting and sending to your library. You can also sticky-note parts of articles. The bookmarked and saved information can be accessed by a number of devices after downloading a small file. My Library is “in the cloud” however and can be accessed on the web.

Classes could simply share ideas about issues with others by giving out the location on the web. Educators can apply for a free upgrade which allows an entire grade to have accounts with pre-set privacy setiings.

Students would be motivated to read articles as they could communicate with their classmates. This is a study aid for research reports – study at school and write at home. A teacher could highlight and share articles with students and get comments back about what was read.

Some students would find this extremely helpful for studying if it works with ebooks. It makes finding information for research reports fast.

There are videos, audio, documents and photos on topics of teacher interest for training or the classroom.

It has the sites in a visual format though one can use the search box to access that and others. Students and teachers could grab short informational of training videos on topics, pictures for reports, and audio clips.

This site seems to provide a variety of noncontroversial and useful sites.

Many resources for teachers – lesson plans which can be searched by grade, subject, or title; current information links,

all kinds of advice like first day of school or classroom management; and newsletters.

There are many printables in the bulletin board section which students might use for projects. Teachers might be lucky and run across a great lesson plan.

This seems useful to check through carefully and make a note on what is useful for oneself.

Summer is almost gone - next week into school. Last year was busy and I suspect this year will be too. I've spent some time this summer trying to put together what wants to be a library skills task analysis and timeline, but what will be a task analysis based partly on Teacher's Manuals, 21st century skills for elementary school, and what worked last year. It's dependent on the teachers' schedule - well, during the rainy season most will be on page 145. My framework is a compilation (guess of what) for each grade, k-5, without editing at this point. Ideas?

This summer, I am working on becoming more expressive. I am taking a beginners acting class and reading up on storytelling. A goal is to motivate all the students to participate more.

Star Tests are now two weeks away. There is tension. There is worry. There are short tempers. There are thank-yous for help. The teachers try to cover everything that might be on the test. The librarian imagines what might be on the test besides selecting the correct encyclopedia. The students continue to read R.L. Stine. Will life be better after the test...?

Ok, you know I'll be surprised if I hit 2 on the counter before I return.

The book ordering went well - new Spanish books, good reading, and science this year. The kids like the Mostly Ghostly's and more. The only reject was one set of grade 2 mystery stories - the old copies went out, but I can assume that the students were running short of choices. Many more verbal exchanges would be helpful.

It's that budget cut time of the year and everyone is wondering what will happen to this library building-up project. Hopefully, two more steps of automation and two years of basic book buying will not ouch the system.

I'm almost through the 900's (not including biography) in automating. It simply takes time. Can't seem to get my other school to snap to the idea of automating, though.

It's time for book orders. There are enough requests to use twice as much money as allocated. New states books are $1000, for example, and this much money is all that is given to a small school of say, 330. Motivating, educational, colorful, clean, reading level, author, how-many-similar, and which-is-better-for-our-school to consider.

The opening of school has been busy. One school greeted me with a huge stack of books without spine label and/or circulation cards. This was the result of converting an extra room into a classroom so that there would be only 20 students in the 4/5 grades. The other with the incredibly motivating task of getting Destiny ready for use, which requires adding Dewey 700 through 900 and fiction still. The library will be so much more easily accessed and cared for with the automation.

As to my favorite moments using SLL 2.0, I'd include the Rollyo on dyslexia as it was so quick to put together having a Special Ed. background. Del.icio.us also was exciting since it looks like it could be easily organized and then searched by teachers and students. It was a special joy to be following directions that worked. This gave me courage. Perhaps I will go forward into HTML and setting up web pages.

It was quite a pleasant surprise to locate an old friend while playing with the blogging spots. I am a great believer in serendipitous searching. However, as there is so much on the web, this overview of 2.0 tools sped up what could have taken much longer.

There are probably a couple one-sentence comments to be made about this experience. One is that knowing about the internet can be real power with many young people.

The blog will prove to be helpful as a teaching reflection site. I will remember to include noteworthy yet relevant keywords so blog searches will pick up the ones I wish to share.

World eBook Fair has offered free downloads of books from July 4 to August 4 since 2006. This fair is sponsored by the World Public Library. The World Public Library has classic books in childrens' and science fiction plus many government publications. There is a selection of audio books. These are both related and linked to Project Gutenberg. Gutenberg promotes free ebooks and has a variety. You can RSS feed it to your homepage to get daily updates on newly added books.

The Best Places to Get Free Books led to Daily Lit which allows one to subscribe to books in daily/weekly installments on their RSS feed. I subscribed to Common Sense by Thomas Paine, as it is one of the ALA Library selections. It is in 24 installments. I would go for 48 to get fewer words per day - more like a daily words of wisdom.

PodcastAlley had a good list of library productions as did Podcast.net. I preferred the latter because it had a description with the title without having to click on anything. This made for faster skimming. I visited Bookvoyages and listened to a couple podcasts.

Sirsi Dynix Institute turned up in each search. I downloaded Sirsi Dynix onto my iTunes. Later, I saw that you could make an RSS feed with it. You could send it to Bloglines but not Blogspot, so I sent it to my Google homepage. Now there is a whole section on the Google page just for Sirsi. Maybe, in retrospect, I'll put it in the Reader. It's hard to imagine having an hour though, to listen to their podcast.

Educational Podcast Directory has a lot of stuff which I will need to look at a little at a time. The one I started to listen to turned out to be a bit different than what was expected. I little more direction as to which podcasts are worth listening to would be helpful.

This is a newer version of The Book. (It has an additional scene at the end!) I've enjoyed viewing this each time I've run into it.

I looked at and enjoyed all the videos listed on the Web 2.0 page. In spending more time with You Tube, I discovered that there are some extremely sickening violent ones to view - so watch out! You too can hold your stomach for 15 minutes. On the other hand, running into these and watching them could help one define him or herself by determining what is desirable versus what needs to be avoided or cured in life.

Teacher Tube crashed both times I accessed it using Firefox 2.0.0.6, while Yahoo's collection kept timing out.

Hello,
I intend to write a newsy blog entry and attempt to put it into "newstuff4libr ". A postscript will tell how easy this process was.

Well, I did a laundry this morning, sort of a spring cleaning type. My goal is immaculate - to stress the importance of household chores in daily life. I don't expect to get any action, but I'm hoping to be able to make my point. Ben Franklin took the idea of structure in daily life to an extreme, as I understand it, yet I value what he did. Each day he would follow a schedule like clockwork - eat, shower, dress, drive his horse to work.

This laundry shall be followed by ironing, as I am preparing for a weekend trip. This is not to the Bahamas or Club Med, and it is by myself as per usual. However, I will be going to visit someone I like rather than to a cold, unknown, luxury, beach hotel.

To top it off and to break up the monotomy, InfoPeople have a webcast at 12 which I will attempt to log onto. It is about becoming a consultant, which does not interest me except for the fact that the person who is talking sounds interesting.

Then I plan to dash about to do some errands - bank, drycleaning, return video, buy coffee - and, upon return, compete the ironing set for today.

8/1/07 Well what do you think? Forget the newsy stuff, or continue? Remember in the old days, women used to use men's names to credit their writing because of the worry that women were too vulnerable.

On the California Curriculum Connections wiki, I am:
Idea #30: In addition to Idea #24, one could have a wiki with reference links and how-to's for the types of projects, assignments, and reports given by the teachers in a particular school. For example, if a student needed a book report assignment, he/she could look on the wiki to find a template or copy of the specific assignment. If the student was stuck with how to do the book report, he/she could read some prompts from the teacher.

Gosh, I like all your ideas for use of a wiki in school - for compiling lists of inventors and/or explorers, and a place for each member to write their findings for a collaborative report. Each person's contribution to a group effort on one topic can be accessed and discussed. I'm trying to think how a wiki could link Word documents from individual participant's home computer.
Later: you can link a Word file created on your computer by putting it in the wiki's file archives, then linking it to the page. It becomes a downloadable file.

What comes to mind after reading the OCLC NextSpace Newletter is that libraries will always be of major importance in a country that values education and freedom. No matter where you live, if you want to learn about something, there is a place with books, technology, and interested people to help you study.

Ideally, articles should be indexed by a person so that no news is lost; perhaps part of the job of posting on a website would be confirming some obvious search terms and adding any "tags". Also, people should be able to access computers relatively easily in order to retrieve the articles. Plus, they need to have enough time with the computer to learn about the fun Web 2.0 sites like Flickr and Blogger.

Of course, the school library would be responsible for teaching skills while the public library reinforces and reviews. The school library would also be responsible for creating a studious yet enjoyable environment for the particular population. Thusly, children who visit the library will desire to continue to visit as adults.

Ok...Technorati. I compared searching with www.technorati.com, www.livejournal.com, www.blogsearch.google.com, and www.bloglines.com for the term Greyhaven. I was able to find the blogs for specific people using the Technorati and the Google.

The videos found on Technorati about School Library 2.0 were worthwhile! Looking for political viewpoints about the latest news would be fascinating, yet endlessly time consuming. Technorati did have the greatest variety with its search results. I'm not opening an account for lack of any reason at this time.

As far as tags go, I've begun by listing my own from specific to general so that one could skim; for example, looking for the tag "history" at the end of each list. I have a list of eight general tags which each citation/website/etc. would include.

PS I checked Technorati the day after this entry. The term Greyhaven brought this blog onto the listing.

I looked at many of the 2.0 winning sites. The ones I enjoyed most were the Fun sites and the book-related sites. Www.OneSentence.com had a good percentage of interesting, readable sentences - a bit like poetry. Www.FwdItOn.com included some really funny stuff amongst the entries. I'd love to publish on www.Lulu.com at some point - the how-to seemed easy to follow. Www.biblio.com was able to find an out-of-print reader I've been looking for; however it was in England at 10 pounds.
Ning.com didn't have anything to interest me at this time. Again, the aromatherapy sites were either ads or simply one-member-looking sites. Onward to Thing 12!

Well, my aromatherapy websites did not have RSS feeds. There are too many other places of interest that could be RSS'd though, so I'll wait until some information need turns up.
Now I tried the Google Blog Search and to my surprise ran into a college pal who I knew as a musician, and who is now involved with educating at-risk youth. (See Picture) Wow what a find! I shall email.

Most of the feed directories seemed too all encompassing and cold - blogs from all over the world. Here, we have people from all over the world at our work sites. I settled for headlines from the Chronicle for news and spent time (will spend more time too) at the school library blog.

I like that the RSS is right on my Google page along with the Google groups etc. This allows me to separate advertisements, job related, and personal information into categories which I can now access by predilection.
This would obviously be great for a school calendar or PTA. Parents would not have to search backpacks at 5:00 PM but could check for new news each morn or eve.

Perhaps it's because of the number of people using the blogs, photo places, and websites that make them so easy not to work. So many times, it seems, teachers get started on a project which can not be completed because something from the hardware or software or website does not work. This is not pleasing or practical.
I enjoy using a digital camera because it is easy to use. You just put it in the camera dock and press the buttons that you can easily review in the manual.
I'd like to use Flickr right now; however, I must wait for some glitch in the system. I suppose there are people trying to out think these large group used websites and it's a challenge to keep them working. Two people with different great ideas for one website at precisely the same moment might do some damage.
Basically, technology is entertaining and fast when you need it.
